Advent

Advent is a season of waiting in anticipation of the coming of Christ.  The readings may be prophesy of the coming of the Messiah which we celebrate at Christmas.  The readings may be in anticipation of the coming of the risen Christ in His full glory.  This is a season in which we are aware of the vivid difference between a life in Christ and a life in the world.

The liturgical color for the season is blue.  In the past it was purple or violet.  Some churches still use purple.  Advent is a quiet season of waiting and expectation, but not a penitential season.  This was part of the reason behind the color change.

Advent is four Sundays long.  It is the four Sundays before Christmas.  The longest Advent season occurs when Christmas is on a Sunday.  The shortest Advent season occurs when Christmas is on a Saturday.

There are several traditions used to count down the days until Christmas.  Most common are the Advent calendar and the Jesse Tree.
